Documents needed for your faster road test depend on how old you are

 

License Applicants Age 18 and over (Class D)

If you are the age of 18 or older, in order for you to be able to take your road test you must bring with you the following:

  • NYS DMV photo permit with no *expiration dates
  • Must follow any restrictions that apply such as glasses/contacts, special equipment…etc
  • Pre-License Course MV-278 (expires in a year from date issued) or Drivers Education Certificate MV-285 (expires two years from date issued)

*If you have a visitor status on your permit, it can not be expired on the day of your road test. If your status is expired you will not be allowed to take your road test.

License Applicants Under Age 18 (Class DJ)

If you are under age 18, in order for you to be able to take your road test you must bring with you the following:

  • NYS DMV photo for at least 6 months permit with no *expiration dates
  • Pre-License Course MV-278 (expires in a year from date issued) or Drivers Education Certificate MV-285 (expires two years from date issued)
  • have a minimum of 50 hours of supervised practice driving with
    • at least 15 hours at night (after sunset)
    • at least 10 hours in moderate to heavy traffic
  • Certification of Supervised Driving (MV-262) completed by your parent or guardian to certify that you have had the required hours of supervised practice driving (you must give the MV-262 to the license examiner each time you take a road test)

We recommend that all drivers of all ages have this amount and type of practice. We also recommend that you take a driver education course or professional driving lessons.

Administrative Items You Should Know

Arrive on Time! DMV Suggests that you arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled time.

Prepare to wait! You’ve waited weeks for your road test! Be prepared to wait when you get to the site. The appointment you have 19 – 29 other students have the same time. So you will be likely be waiting 30 – 50 Minutes for you turn.

Not all road test sites have bathrooms! Go to the restroom before you head to the site just in case your site doesn’t have one.

Your road test is not like it is on t.v. You will be taking your road test in NYC live streets. No obstacle course with cones. Get ready for traffic and pedestrians

Going to take your road test with a family/friend in their car – make sure that not only you have your paperwork, your driver needs to have their license and the car should have all paperwork as well.

Think you can get some last minute practice and drive by the road test site that you are doing your exam. Think again you are not allowed to practice at the road test site.

Tips and Suggestions

Know how to drive. Think again. You will need to know what examiners are looking for.  Even if you have experience take at least 1 or more lessons with a driving school. They can help identify driving mistakes you don’t know your making.

Road Test Sites addresses are cross streets.  You have your road test booked, you can’t drive there to practice that doesn’t mean you can’t research the site.  Google maps also lets you see the streets just by going on it and you don’t even have to go there.

If you cancel your appointment you are not getting it back make sure you that you are 100% sure you want to cancel your appointment.

You can not have more than 1 appointment at a time, so you if you booked another appointment you just cancelled the appointment you originally had.
